A lot of people come to me with an idea for their business and a few pages written about them. They want a Logo, a Website and some Business Cards to start making money. Sometimes, this type of approach can work, if this person already has a network of customers for example, or years of experience in a certain field, but for many this type of approach can lead to a very slow start and disappointment.
Here is the uncomfortable truth. Unless you are starting a coaching or training business, where YOU is the product or service - nobody wants to hear about how wonderful you are and if you like to scuba dive. (I love it by the way..). What your prospective customers want to know is why should they give you their money over anybody else, and what value you will bring to them.
Understanding who your customers are, what kind of people they may be, what they are looking for and at what price they will be willing to part with their cash should be your absolute first priority when starting a new venture. Additionally, you should also look into your competition, become their customer and hopefully improve on what they are offering in order to enter the market competitively.

My first website was full of technical jargon and descriptions of my skills & certifications. My portfolio was beautifully designed and showcased, and would appeal to any designer, but to my prospective customers... not so much.
